February 2024 – PDO METEX LCA results
For more sustainable performance polymers: METEX offers PDO with the lowest carbon footprint on the market
As a player in the ecological transition, METEX is committed to measuring the environmental footprint of all its products, using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as the reference method.
At the end of 2023, METEX carried out the LCA* of one of its flagship products: METEX Propanediol T (1,3 Propanediol), which is used in technical applications such as performance polymers and in the formulation of functional fluids.
METEX propanediol T has the lowest carbon footprint on the market: with only 1.6 kg CO2 equivalent/kg, i.e. -64% carbon emissions compared with the conventional diols it replaces.
This comparison is based on public carbon emission data for MPG (1.2 Propanediol) and BDO (1.4 Butanediol) from the petrochemical industry, with similar LCA calculation methodologies. Our score also includes biogenic carbon.
METEX is able to offer a PDO with such a low carbon footprint thanks to its overall circular and sustainable manufacturing process, which enables METEX to recover more than 96% of outgoing flows, and thanks to the valorization of the crude glycerine used for fermentation.
